Nika Shi

"I love aesthetics, finding beauty in the natural world, from the most delicate and touching to the rawness of the elements, with all the powerful feelings these bring".

I am a multi-disciplinary fine artist, living in Yorkshire, UK.

I was born in St. Petersburg into a family of artists, and involved in the artistic life of the family from a very early age - helping prepare for the public exhibitions of my grandfather and mother. Home life took place in their studios, surrounded by paintings, sculptures, art literature and materials.

My formative art education was at home, from my mother Marina, who taught me drawing, painting, composition, and art history. My formal education was also art- and music-based, and took me from St. Petersburg to Moscow, Paris, Manchester and London.

I have a love of aesthetics, of searching for and finding beauty, most of all in the natural world. The sea, with its incredible depth of colours, shades and shadows, I can look at forever: rhythms and cycles that repeat but are also ever-changing. I also give a special place in my painting to flowers, sometimes bringing this together with seascapes and landscapes.

The dramatic natural beauty of Great Britain is perhaps my favourite of all. It never ceases to inspire reverie and awe, from the Hebridean Isles to the Cornish coves, and everything in between.

I have my own method of working, with brushes and palette knives, though I often prefer to use my own hands, palms and fingers directly as I find these me closer to the canvas, helping to transmit the full breadth and energy of feelings, and nuances of colours.

I often use acrylic and oil for painting, two materials I find very similar in their elasticity. I love to explore possibilities to sculpt paintings by applying these materials using different methods and tools.

Other materials that I am particularly fond of are pastels and watercolours. I consider these to be some of the most beautiful and complex; when working with the latter, I also combine using my fingers and hands with tools, mixing and discovering techniques.

In addition to my love for nature, I have a lifelong love for music, which is both separate from and deeply connected to my artwork. I studied music on an equal basis with art from early childhood, learning classical piano and composition.

Thanks to music and playing the piano, I began to use my hands and fingers for painting, developing my own techniques. Music is very much ‘in’ my artwork, which I think shows itself in intangible ways that are hard to describe but possible to feel.

Lastly, you will notice another theme in my works of ‘dreams and fairy tales’, which are worlds toward which I am endlessly (and sometimes hopelessly!) pulled.
